Karen Szumlinski

As a first generation college student (my father barely finished high school) and an U.S. immigrant, I know well the challenges facing first-gen and immigrant students trying to navigate the academic scene (and the culture shock of living in) in the U.S.  As someone of Polish heritage, I have also experienced discrimination and ostracism, particularly when I attended high school outside of my district. This background and all of my lived experiences have shaped my research direction and make me the person I am today. I am proud of my Polish heritage, my Canadian nationality and my efforts as a neuroscientist, a professor, and a mother. I have served as the Graduate Student Representative for the DEI Committee of PBS for over 5 years as I feel strongly about creating a culture of equity within PBS that is inclusive and welcoming to all.
